This Mechanical Engineering position involves designing components and assemblies to equip various new CNC machine tools utilizing 5ME’s cryogenic through-spindle through-tool machining technology. Pioneering technologies are continuously developed in-house and solutions are delivered to machine tool OEMs and customers.

The Job Entails:

  • Designing accessories for spindle, drawbar, rotary couplings and plumbing from the spindle to the cryogenic liquid nitrogen
    supply (Dewar)
  • Optimizing cryogenic hardware for lowest cost
  • Managing Bills of Materials and Engineering Change Notices
  • Supporting cryogenic retrofit kit needs of customer projects and R&D machining requirements
  • Working with Project Management to plan, schedule and monitor hardware builds with multiple suppliers
  • Performing design and process FMEAs
  • Collaborating with other people on a routine basis to lead and participate in face-to-face meetings, web meetings, and
    teleconferences that are in-house, at machine tool OEMs and at customer sites
  • Working with Sales and Marketing to ensure proper up-front project definition and scope are adequately assessed
  • Working with others in the hands-on implementation of mechanical elements to add cryogenic machining technology to various
    CNC machine tools in and out of the Tech Center
  • Consulting with R&D Test Engineers, Machinists and customers to resolve project issues
  • Recommending continuous improvements in procedures, equipment and/or practices
  • Providing technical support for the Purchasing department when collaborating with suppliers
  • Conducting Design Reviews and providing updates on project progresses
  • Training customers and internal personnel at trade shows and customer sites
  • Keeping abreast of recent improvements in manufacturing technology and productivity
  • 15% overnight domestic and international travel possible, although generally a 5-day work week and home most nights

You will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree in mechanical or mechatronics engineering, with a broad multi-disciplinary technological background
  • Five+ years of experience designing in a hands-on CNC machine tool industry
  • Knowledge and familiarity with respect to spindle/tool clamping systems, steep tapers and HSK types
  • Strong understanding of machine dynamics and failure modes
  • 3D CAD proficiency, preferably in Unigraphics NX, with GD≈T expertise
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from executives and customers
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to write business correspondence, reports, operator
    manuals and technical documentation using, spreadsheet, word processing, presentation and email software
  • Ability to lead and work with others to solve technical and procedural problems, dealing with varied situations where only
    limited standardization exists. Root cause analysis and problem resolution experience are a must; six sigma methodology
    knowhow is beneficial
  • Ability to methodically and meticulously document Design of Experiments (DOE)
  • Understanding of mechanical and thermal Finite Element Analysis (FEA), thermodynamics and heat transfer
  • A proactive focus on innovation, teamwork and safety
