This salaried Application Engineering position is responsible to plan, coordinate, and execute tasks relating to machining, including part programming, cutting tool selection, part prove-out, work holding selection, cycle time studies, machine set up and run-off at customer sites to deliver solutions to customers utilizing 5ME’s cryogenic machining technology.

The Job Entails:

  • Reviewing and analyzing customer part drawings, and machining requirements and programming CNC machine tools
  • Running test and part programs on 5ME’s CNC machine tools
  • Contributing to customer proposals including time studies, machine type recommendations, fixture / tooling requirements and time estimates to complete
  • Contributing to projects from proposal to installation while adhering to the project schedule
  • Consulting with R&D Test Engineers and customers on machining applications and issues
  • Testing alternative techniques and methods. Recommending changes in procedures, equipment, or practices as needed while working in the 5ME Technical Center
  • Providing training to internal and customer personnel
  • Keeping aware of recent technological improvements in manufacturing technology (cutting tools, machines, metallurgy, and  cryogenics) and productivity improvements, etc.
  • Collaborating with other people on a routine basis
  • 10% overnight domestic and international travel possible, although generally a 5-day work week and home most nights.

You will have:

  • Knowledge of and experience in cutting tool selection, part programming, setup, and operation of CNC machine tools
  • Ability to methodically and meticulously document testing conditions including part setup, feeds & speeds, part programming, tool wear  (utilizing a digital microscope), etc.
  • Advanced blueprint reading experience, including GD&T
  • Advanced machining process expertise, including cutter application, material metrology, etc.
  • Setup/Operating HMC, HTC, VMC, VTC and CNC lathe machining experience
  • CAD/CAM programming experience in MasterCAM or CATIA required (3-4 axis required, 5-axis preferred)
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers and customers
  • Ability to calculate speeds, feeds, chip load, complex angles, proportions, area, circumference, volume, etc.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, trigonometry and geometry
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, and email software
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Five years of experience in a metal cutting environment with cutting tool/machine tool applications experience required
